Product Description
L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in high concentrations in skeletal and muscle cells. Dietary carnitine can be obtained from meats and other foods of animal origin. Although it is considered an amino acid, carnitine is not used by the body for protein synthesis. Its main role is to provide energy to muscle groups by optimizing the metabolism of fat (fat burning). Carnitine has been used for years by serious athletes for muscle building, energy boosting, weight loss, and fat reduction. Since the natural production of carnitine declines with age, we need to obtain even more from our diet. According to nutritionist, Robert Crayhon in his book, The Carnitine Miracle, supplemental carnitine enhances immunity by providing energy to disease-fighting immune cells and helps to maintain cellular oxygen supply even as our circulatory system declines.(1) Crayhon asserts that everyone over 40 should supplement with carnitine, but it is especially important for people who are most likely to be deficient, such as the elderly and obese, individuals with hypothyroidism, and diabetic patients. A variety of published studies show that carnitine is useful in improving cardiac function by stimulating the hearts energy supply and improving performance. It has also been shown to help regulate heart arrhythmia.(2,3) L-Carnitine is one of the few natural substances that the FDA has approved (under the name Carnitor) for use in treating certain medical conditions. Kidney dialysis patients are injected with Carnitor to prevent weakness and low blood pressure. Oral Carnitor is prescribed for L-carnitine deficiency and to normalize elevated blood lipid levels.
